It was around 11pm local time on Sunday night in Germany, the eleventh hour of our marathon trip. We had some snacks along the way, but no dinner, and we were getting hungry!
Neal came prepared with bus timetables and having left the last of the four train rides, we knew that the last bus for the night was due any minute. I spotted a pub across the road from the bus stop, getting ready to close. Neal & Ann ran over and ordered a quick takeaway, the ham & cheese sandwich pictured above.
Strangers did amazing teamwork on our behalf. With the bus in sight down the road, sandwiches were hastily made, and no time to wrap it, Neal came out of the pub, just holding the bare sandwiches. In the meantime, Grace is standing at the bus stop with suitcases getting ready to beg the driver for mercy in broken German. But no need because the two other locals who had been watching our shenanigans refused to get on the bus, not until my whole family was reunited. They were forcing the driver to wait. The driver took pity on us and accepted just €1 for the three of us.
